RESEARCH TASK 1
ANALYSIS
VOGUE
This is Vogues December 2018 cover, with Saffron Vadher as the cover star. Their main image is a mid shot. The cover star has been represented as attractive, appealing and possibly seductive through the use of mis en scene. Her semi-revealing clothing and facial expression give us this impression. The colour scheme of white and reds also indicates this as the colour red connotes passion, power, love etc. The masthead is at the top of the cover, in a serif font - the classic 'Vogue' font. There is only one image on this cover. There is over 15 separate cover lines, with a range of about 3 different fonts and colours. This cover does not include a puff, and hardly features any additional institutional information.
CONTENTS PAGE
This is one of the content pages for this months issue. It has an L shape layout, including six images. Five of these are the same size, with one slightly larger and central, making it more noticeable than the other images. These images have been anchored to the text by just being placed beside the contents overview, however the larger image has been anchored with a quote which is also slightly larger than the majority of the other text. This also stands out as it is in a different font. There is a range of 4/5 different fonts on this page, all serif fonts maintaining a similar style. The text is organised into sections, giving a bit of a guide to the reader by showing where you can find specific content in the magazine. They do this by numbering the sub-categories. The fact that the numbers go up to 154 (at least on this page) indicate that this is large magazine with plenty of material
(VOGUE) OVERALL:
Overall, while it follows the same codes and conventions of almost all fashion magazines, Vogue has a very distinct house style. The font used for the masthead was so notorious for being Vogues masthead font, that the font itself is now called the 'Vogue' font. Being arguably one of the biggest fashion magazines, Vogue has the budget for very high profile celebrities to feature both as cover stars and in articles. This brand promotes the ideology of being fashion conscious, attractive, trendy and as very important things. The people featured in this magazine are represented as very glamorous, attractive, professional through the use of mis en scene. Vogue attracts a primarily female audience of 17-29 year olds, and appeals to them by having up to date information surrounding beauty standards, fashion and youth culture, pop news etc.
GLAMOUR MAGAZINE
ARTICLE PAGEThis single-page article has an L shape layout, with a montage of photos on the page, with a main image in the centre. There are 13 separate images included in this montage, all varying in size of bigger and slightly smaller. They are anchored to the page using numbers for each individual image. They have used around 7 different fonts, both serif and sans serif, some bold and not. They have also used block capitols to help certain or more important text stand out. The text is organised with sub headings and a column of text to separate from the images. The colour scheme is a range of natural colours, relating to all of the animal print clothing and patterns used on the page. The main colours are orange, black and white. They have represented ethnicity equally as the only two people featured on this page are both from a minority ethnic group. Both women have been portrayed positively.
W MAGAZINE
Kate Moss is the cover star of this magazine. They have used a medium long shot as their main image. Kate moss has been represented stereotypically for a 90s female model, as she has been dressed feminine in a dress and has a seductive/ suggestive facial expression. There are 6 different cover lines, discussing subjects like fashion, pop culture/ other celebrities, makeup, relationship advice etc. The masthead is at the top of the page, in a serif font. There is one image used on this cover. This cover includes little institutional information, with only a bar code in the bottom left corner. This cover consists of 2 fonts (3 including the masthead), primarily in the colour black with a red accent colour. No puffs have been used.
This contents page has a singular image on the left hand side of the page, covering the majority of the middle too. It has been laid out with this image on the left and the text on the right of the page, designed like a column. This image is anchored to the page with a title labelling the image above it, and a short description of the photograph just below it. Majority of the page is in a serif font, giving the page a more feminine and formal theme. There is little text in sans serif font, and this text is significantly smaller. The text is organised with subheadings in this column, all subheadings being larger and bolder than the body of text. This main body of text has been organised into categories under the subheadings "What, Why, Where, When & Departments". There is also titles to label the page itself and the magazine, which are larger in order to stand out.
ARTICLE PAGEThis page follows a Z shape layout. The images are used to make a photomontage in the centre, therefore naturally being the focus of this page. They all vary in sizes, overlapping each other. These images are anchored to the text using numbers - each image is numbered and relates to the category labelled with this number. This page includes both serif and sans serif fonts. The main bodies of text are mainly sans serif, with headings, titles, subheadings being serif fonts and often made bold and larger to stand out even more. There isn't a specific or clear colour scheme on this page as the theme comes from what is in the images of these clothing items. There is an accent colour within the text of a light blue.
(W MAGAZINE) OVERALL:
W magazines house style includes their iconic masthead, which is just a W in a serif font. This stands out from other magazines as the shortness and bluntness is different from the majority of one word mastheads and titles used on other magazines. The ideology presented in this fashion magazine is very classic and timeless, with a strong set of morals focusing on class and tradition, whilst still being progressive. They promote this by featuring glamorous products, with a more toned down colour palette and neat layout. The people and places in this magazine are all shown in a positive way, dressed formally in high quality fashion. W's target audience is fashion conscious, well etiquette women with important political interests.

Representation in terms of media refers to how different groups of people such as races, genders, and cultures are portrayed and depicted in movies, TV shows, advertisements and other forms of media.
-How a media text presents social issues, events, regional and national identity, age, ethnicity and gender to an audience. This is done through shot type or angle, mis en scene or editing.
RESEARH TASK 2
LO. To research genre codes & conventions
Genre Conventions.
Imagery:
On the cover its usually a single main image of one person/ celebrity. Medium long shots and Long shots are used often in fashion magazines as it helps show of the clothes more. Quite often on the article page and/or contents page, there is a range of images but one main image that our focus is drawn more towards.
Colour Palette:
There is usually bright or vibrant colours incorporated in the cover, however there isn't a specific, singular colour palette for this genre of magazine. On the article page, the colour palette is inspired by the images on that page. The contents pages tend to be more plain, focusing on the text with a few images that don't necessarily follow a specific colour palette.
Typography:
The masthead on a magazine is the same font every time, but the colour of the text often changes to follow the colour palette of the cover. Serif fonts are typically used more on magazines targeted to a female audience, as its stereotypically a more feminine font. The cover page has lots of cover lines, all varying in size, fonts, topics, colours etc. We often see accent colours within the cover lines of a magazine.
Lexis (terminology):
All fashion magazines follow a similar semantic field in terms of lexis. There are lots of uplifting and positive words used when describing products and also words that could be quite suggestive. For example: Beautiful, power, love, glowing, perfect, better, gorgeous
Topics for articles(stories):
Celebrity interviews, product reviews, cover fashion events, reports about the business side of the industry, fashion trends and what celebrities are wearing, catwalks. Some fashion magazines are starting to progress in a slightly different direction as they have in the past, now including things like political discussions, sustainability and environmental issues etc. Fashion/trends are still the main focus though.
Representations of people:
Fashion magazines tend to represent people quite stereotypically. They are much more diverse in areas like ethnicity as opposed to things like body type and age, although they are progressively getting better with body type as we are starting to see more features of plus size models within the fashion industry, that including magazines. However it is still predominantly skinnier models that we are used to seeing. Fashion magazines are typically empowering for whoever in featured on the cover as common representations of the cover star are to appear confident, glamorous etc.

Primary research is using firsthand sources and evidence, for example having used your own questionnaires. Secondary research is when the data is attained from someone else, second hand.
RESEARCH TASK 3
- Inclusive, feminine, wealthy
- Gender has been represented both stereotypically and anti stereotypically. Women dominate this magazine which is usual for this genre of magazine, especially when you consider the target audience (women). However, not including men suggests that women are the superior gender which is historically very anti-stereotypical.
- Age has been represented here partially inclusive as there is both older and younger women featured, however the younger people have been prioritised as they have the larger images and appear more frequently.
- Ethnicity has been represented positively. They have included people from ethnic minorities, including the cover star which gives power to that ethnic minority, but most people featured are white. This is stereotypical in not only a fashion magazine, but most media.
- Fashion has been represented as important as the shot types have been strategically chosen in order to show of the garments that the people are wearing.
- They have repeatedly used the stereotype that thin, young women are the beauty standard.
- bold, old fashioned,
- Gender has been represented both stereotypically and anti stereotypically. The cover star Kate Moss has been dressed femininely with a confident and suggestive facial expression. This is a stereotypical representation of women. Similarly to Vogue, men have been represented as the less important gender in this magazine as they hardly feature at all, and the women dominate this magazine. Historically this is anti stereotypical, but for this particular genre and target audience, it is expected.
- This magazine represents being youthful as the good/ desired thing, as there are no elder people featured.
- However fashion magazines tend to be more inclusive than other media sources as lots of famous models come from ethnic minorities, but this magazine doesn't present us with anything other than white people. (both stereotypical and anti stereotypical)
- Fashion has been represented as high end, luxury and important in this magazine. This connotation has been constructed through mis en scene and the shot types. All shot types are either long shots or medium long shots, making the clothes the focal point.
- They have repeatedly used the stereotype that thin, young women are the beauty standard.

RESEARCH TASK 4
Secondary Audience Research
Vogue attracts a primarily female audience of 17-29 year olds. It categorises its audience as it has a whole branch of different Vogues that appeal to different people. For example, there is American Vogue, British Vogue, Vogue Italia, Vogue France and over 15 more. There is also TeenVogue. This is directed to the younger audiences who share the same interests and values as the older viewers, but promotes younger artists, celebrities etc to appeal to the readers.
W magazines audience is 33.35% male and 66.65% female. The largest group of visitors are 35-34 year olds.

Media HW article text 30/09
The resurgence of 90s fashion has taken the style world by storm, captivating a new generation while appealing to those who lived through the decade.
From oversized denim jackets to fur coats and chunky sneakers, the nostalgia for 90s aesthetics is palpable on runways and city streets alike. This revival can be attributed to various factors, including social media influencers, vintage fashion trends, and a collective yearning for simpler times.
The revolutionary development of second hand clothing apps like Vinted and Depop, and the way thrift shopping has also gained popularity, allows fashion enthusiasts to hunt for authentic vintage pieces that reflect the unique styles of the 90s, making it both sustainable and trendy.
As brands reintroduce classic 90s pieces into their collections, we see a blend of old and new, with modern twists on timeless designs. Whether it's the return of baggy jeans, football shirts, or claw clips, 90s fashion is making a significant comeback, reminding us that every trend eventually comes full circle. This revival not only celebrates the past but also encourages self-expression and creativity, proving that fashion is truly timeless.
