L.O. to discuss what media is and how it impacts our lives
The definition of media, "the main means of mass communication" TV, film, newspapers, magazines, posters, social media, advertisment, podcasts, streaming sites, text/text messages, apps, games, radio
Creating Meaning
A sign can be any physical form to which we give meaning, including words, pictures, colours, clothes, etc. My subject position is a 13 year old female, straight and white, not very rich, youngest of 4 siblings, am a student, live in Cornwall.
This particular magazine cover could appeal to people with a different subject position because it displays a very high profile celebrity "speaking from the heart" which can make people feel intrueged to see a young woman speak her truth. Another person may look at it and look at the fashion perspective of it, they may like or not like what she is wearing and form an opinion on her herself.
Denotation - the dictionairy definition of something. Connotation - the deeper meaning- what we associate with the word. For example, when we see or think of a gun, it connotes the image of protection as well as gangs and crime, and sometimes death and injury. Clowns connote the idea of maybe humour or birthday partys, some others may have connotations of scary things such as evil / killer clowns. Thor, to somebody that doesnt already know who he is, may connote heriocness, or strength because he is dressed up like a superhero.

Connotations
This advert connotes the idea that coca-cola is a big company / brand because they have big celebrities collaborating and working with them, such as Taylor Swift. The colour palette of this advert is also very minimal, connoting to us it has a few recognisable and signature colours. In the image on the advert, we can see the drink being poured into a fancy glass, suggesting to us that it is a very nice drink, not cheap and rubbish.
The film poster I have chosen is visibly aimed at older or more mature audiences, as suggested to us with the men smoking and the film name itself doesn't connote a child friendly image to us. The fact that Brad Pitt - a very big name in the film industry - is on the front of the poster is giving us the impression that this film is quite big or good as they have such a big celebrity right on the cover. The font that 'fight club' is written in can connote the thought of the streets or something similar as the font can look like graffiti or street style lettering.
An excellent start Matilda - well done
